Prioritising your workload is easy!

Prioritisie your workload!

One thing I often find is that people struggle to prioritise their workloads, whether at home or in the office. People tend to get so bogged down  in having so much to do, yet end up achieving nothing!

Does this sound familiar?

I did a little research online for 'prioritising workloads' and I got hundreds of hits called 'the top 20 ways to prioritise' and the '10 step process for prioritising', I mean, really…10 or 20 steps? That just exhausts me thinking about it!

The best advice I have and what works for me, both when it comes to my personal and work life, to create that lovely state of 'balance' is to simply follow these three rules.

1) Write down the top 5 tasks you need to complete within a day/week (normally with the most important up the top)
2) Cross it off when you have completed it (this strokes your ego with a sense of achievement and removes clutter in your head to fit more in). If you do not get it done in your desired time, put it up the top of the list for the next day/week.
3) Follow the 90 minute rule (I learnt this in my small business management course, and have used it most days since with great success)

In its essence, the 90 minute rule is to break up your tasks into 90 minute segments. Every 90 mins, if possible, take a breather.

Now, I am not saying that you are going to complete your tasks within 90 minutes, (you might and that is great) but typically, your attention span will only last this long, and you need a breather anyway.

Please try this, and let me know how you go!

Stop making excuses and take accountability for your actions

Stop making excuses and take accountability for your actions

Take the credit for your wins and be accountable for your actions.

If your live, love, relationships, business is thriving, keep growing, keep improving, and keep going, well done!

If it is not thriving, if you are struggling, feeling sad and think your stagnant in your productivity, then what do you think you can you do to make it bloom?

What do you need to change and learn to turn a failure (or learning) into a success (or positive)?

We all know the 5 Ps? Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Whether in life or business you need a plan you need goals, you need focus and you need to move forward.

When planning is done properly, it can help you to manage risk, avoid disappointment and utilise time effectively.

A good place to start is to Identify and acknowledge the weaknesses of both yourself, your business and even your staff. However, try not to get too hung up on these, this is just a starting point!  It is a place to leverage off and develop from and don't forget to stop celebrating successes and wins - this is vital! .

In business, there is little room for failures, however, they say in order to success we need to make mistakes. I guess what I am saying is, learn from mistakes but have processes in place (as above) to ensure they are not catastrophic failures that will cost you a lot of time or money.

When you allow yourself and your staff to make excuses, you are on the slippery slope to losses in productivity and gains, and  you're at risk of losing respect in the professional world.

It’s uncomfortable but it’s true! In order to succeed we have to fail, we need to learn from our mistakes, and then use that learning to make better choices and judgements.

Accept it, and now start moving forward! Remember Richard Branson? He made a lot of mistakes in his businesses over the many years being an entrepreneur, however he has learnt from his mistakes, applied or tweaked his methods and then gone from there.

In an ideal world, we may wish we didn't make mistakes, this sometimes would be easier, however, it also means that we would not challenge ourselves to move beyond our comfort zone.

If you take nothing out of this blog but this one comment take this!...Do not keep making mistakes without learning from them!!

Some basic principles that may help you is:

Find someone that will hold you accountable

  • Don’t blame others for your own mistakes
  • Observe other people, learn from their mistakes ans successes, ask them for advice
  • Share your mistakes and successes with others, talk about how you could have done it differently, network
  • Learn new skills to help you in areas of identified weakness, enroll in a new course
  • STOP making excuses
  • Support yourself and your staff
  • DON'T GIVE UP!

Kick that bad habit and create good ones!

Kick that bad habit and create good ones!

Performance Fast Fact!

Did you know that it takes only 20 - 30 days to create a new habit?

Habits can be good or bad... you want to break the bad ones and create the good ones!

Sounds pretty easy doesn't it? Well, if you answered no... then you are probably right!

However, it can and does happen every single day.

The three keys to success are;
1) Decision management - being aware and deciding what needs to change
2) Attention management - giving it your attention
3) Energy management - spending your time wisely to make these changes.

Think of something you want to change or a habit you want to break,
For example;

  • getting into a regular running routine
  • quit smoking
  • stop biting nails...
STOP, BE AWARE, MAKE SOME CHANGES...

Once you are aware of your habit, the one you want to break, or you want to create... think about it, be aware of what it does, how much it costs you, or what you are missing out by not having the "good" habit. Finally, you have to commit to it, commit to the change you want to see, spend your energy focussing on it, start making it happen.

Go on try it!
You know you want too!!!
It may not happen over night... but it will happen!

Talk to Nicky at nicky@pplifecoaching.com.au to learn how you can simply identify what changes you want to make and how to kick the bad habits for good and replace them with healthy habits!
